SONIC YOUTH, 11 JULY 1998, BEACH BUM FEST, JESOLO VENICE, ITALY

Sonic Youth is a group I knew little about. I was at the Jesolo Beach Bum Fest, 3 day event where people camped out near the stage area, as a photographer and manager of a group called Tryptic. Enough said about Tryptic, a bunch of ungratefull loosers.

It was the first time I heard of Sonic Youth and listened to their music. The members of Sonic Youth were very interesting. Some members were young and others not too young. I found their sound to be innovative and creative. They were making their own music, based primarily on Rock & Roll but, unique. I enjoyed very much their attempt to be different and strive for creativity, something many groups of today are very afraid to do.

I was impressed by Kim Gordon and Lee Ronaldo. Thurstone Moore played well but, the memory I have of him the most is when photographers were instructed to leave after the first 3 songs. He made it his point to say "Goodbye photographers" in somewhat of an arrogant way. Maybe he was trying to be funny but, I did not enjoy the tone of his voice. His tone was like a high pitched "snotty boy". But, with that said no one can take away the fact that Sonic Youth is trully an inovative band with a very unique sound and lyrics. I enjoyed Sonic Youth very much.
