Feeder was opening for Skunk Anansie the night I first saw them. I
honestly did not know that much about the band. I did hear their name mentioned
once or twice through MTV or the radio but, had no idea who they were nor what
type of music they played. When they began to play I was immediately taken by
Taka Hirose and his energetic bass playing. In addition I also liked Dean
Tidey's playing. I listened to the band attentively and also listened to the
lyrics which was cleary audible. I wanted to "check these guys out" to see if
they were just "run of the mill" support bands. Well, I liked the band. They
seemed to have it together, they had a unity and most of all and identity. I
liked what I heard and enjoyed their opening act. They mixed all styles of rock
music in a very plausible and pleasing way. I was impressed.
After I was finished photographing the Skunk Anansie gig I then started to go
home. Had a long day and just wanted to get home and relax. As I was proceeding
to my car I noticed Feeder was walking around outside the venue. I made it my
aim to walk to them and compliment them on their gig. They thanked me as if they
weren't deserving of the compliment. But, I assured them that they were good,
and that I've been around the block when it comes to concerts. We started
talking about my experiences and I explained that I was Uriah Heep's official
concert photographer. That is when Jon Lee told me that he used to do some
driving for the Heep. We talked some more about music and bands and I explained
what I do. I gave them my card and asked them to send me an email so I can semd
them some of the photos I took. Like usual that didn't happen. However, I left
Feeder withe a good feeling of "what a bunch of nice guys." I honestly felt that
they would have a chance in this business, and I was looking forward to their
success. Well, here where are in 2006 and Feeder is well known and making
videos. I'm glad for them. It couldn't have happened to a bunch of nicer guys.
Unfortunately, I was blown away as I just visited their site and learned
about Jon Lee's death. I'm still blown away. He was one of the guys that
remeined in my mind when I remember my encounter with Feeder. He was gentle,
kind, and genuine. I'm so disturbed to have learned this news. But, with this
said, one can always feel comforted because he left behind positive feelings
with people he touched. That, to me, is what the soul is all about. Jon, it was
nice to have met you.
