CARL PALMER WORKSHOP VENICE, ITALYCARL PALMER is the famous drummer of Emerson Lake & Palmer or ELP. In my opinion, one ot the greatest groups of the 70's that has palyed many pieces that will remain with us forever. One of my favorite albums was Pictures at an Exhibition followed by Brain Salad Surgery. However, I like all the albums that were produced by ELP.

The first time I saw Carl Palmer was in 1976 or 1977 (hard to remember precise dates of the 70's - those were wild days for me) in Hampton, Virginia when I was serving in the Army at Ft. Eustis, Virginia. I stood in front of the right channel speakers (approx. 6 feet from them) in order to see ELP up close. I stayed there the majority of the concert and 3 days later my ears were still ringing! But is was worth it. Carl Palmer was great and so was the rest of the band. I was fortunate to have seen them in their prime.

Carl Palmer goes way back to the King Crimson era and has acquired a rich talent for drumming. One of his idols was Buddy Rich and one can observe the influences the great Buddy Rich has had on Carl Palmer. While attending his workshop Carl Palmer was very enthusiastic to explain his technique in drumming and the various ways he plays the percussion instruments. He demonstrated various ways to hold the sticks, play the high-hats, and various ways to play the snare drum. In short, anything becomes a percussion instrument that can be hit, banged or taped from various angles. I was very impressed by his interpretation of percussion instrumentation. But, I was extrememly impressed when he talked about his experience in Marocco and then proceeded to play a solo percussion piece influenced by his travels in the area. It was a beautiful piece that made you feel the Moroccon music and imagine being in Morocco.

Carl Palmer is an extremely talented drummer and should not be overlooked if he comes to your town. If you have old ELP albums go back and replay them. Pay special attention to the percussion sound of Carl Palmer and you will rediscover why he is a great drummer. Visit his site and discover his solo career that is really worth while experiencing. Enjoy the phots.
